Check for understanding Sign.jpg

Checking for Understanding (CFU) is an important step in the teaching and learning process. Unless you check for understanding, it is difficult to know exactly what students are getting out of the lesson. Research suggests it is important to identify and confront misconceptions that can interfere with learning. The process, which should be implemented throughout instruction, corrects misconceptions and improves learning. The information gained from CFU strategies allows teachers to monitor their own teaching. In addition, the process of checking for understanding provides a model to students for good study skills. When teachers check for understanding, students become more aware of how they should be self regulating themselves.
